Xodus, a leading energy consultancy approached 3DW to develop an interactive 3D solution that would showcase the planned West of Orkey offshore wind farm. The wind farm located off the coast of Scotland is expected to generate enough clean energy to power over two million homes making a significant contribution to the UK's carbon reduction targets.
3DW came on board due to the sensitive nature of the project, which involves a large number of turbines in an area that is already a key player in the UK's energy mix. The 3D application we built includes views from many key locations of the proposed site, including sensitive areas and historically important locations across the Orkney Islands, plus views and flythroughs of the grid infrastructure that would be needed to connect the project.
Using various data providers including Ordnance Survey, 3DW created a highly detailed and visually pleasing 3D model that accurately represents the proposed wind farm. The model includes interactive elements such as the ability to adjust the design and export location data for use in planning, public relations and community consultation activities.
The 3D application also features a series of animations that showcase the proposed wind farm's impact on the surrounding landscape. These animations provide stakeholders with a better understanding of the project's visual impact and help to facilitate more effective community engagement. In addition to the 3D application, 3DW also produced a series of videos that were used online for marketing purposes as part of a wide consultation plan.
Overall the interactive 3D solution developed by 3DW for the West of Orkey offshore wind farm has proven to be a valuable tool in the project's development, providing stakeholders with a better understanding of the proposal and facilitating more effective community engagement.
