Statkraft asked 3DW to develop an interactive 3D visualisation for the Necton Greener Grid Park in Norfolk.

The 3D visualisation was built to provide a realistic digital representation of the proposed energy park, helping to illustrate how the infrastructure, including synchronous condensers and transformers would sit within the local landscape alongside existing and proposed substations. A primary requirement for the project was to provide clarity on the cumulative visual impact of the development in an area which already had a significant amount of energy infrastructure. 3DW developed a detailed 3D environment using high detail terrain data, creating a geographically accurate base that allowed our team to build all relevant features of the project. To ensure the model was as comprehensive as possible, we also included 3D representations of the existing National Grid Substation expansion allowing stakeholders to view the energy park in its true future context.

The application features a high level of detail for the surrounding buildings and trees, providing necessary scale and orientation for local residents. A key interactive element of the solution is the ability to switch between three specific locations within the site, allowing the user to explore the access roads, internal landscaping and equipment from various angles.

To support the project's planning phase, 3DW provided direct event support at public consultation events. By having a member of the 3DW team present with a high-performance laptop, Statkraft was able to offer live, interactive demonstrations of the model to the public. This hands-on approach allowed the project team to answer specific questions regarding height, scale and screening instantly, providing a level of transparency that traditional static boards cannot achieve.

3DW added significant value to Statkraft’s community engagement strategy with the model served as a powerful communication tool that successfully bridged the gap between technical engineering and public understanding.
