Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSE) approached 3DW to commission a fully interactive 3D model to help with their planning process. The resulting 3D model is a representation of the proposed Orkney Subsea Link connecting Dounreay to Finstown along with the 132kV infrastructure linking the Mainland Island to the islands of South Ronaldsay, Flotta and Hoy.
Working in closely with SSE we built a powerful and versatile visual tool to effectively support the design, planning and stakeholder engagement activities associated with this project.
The 3D model was used extensively in presentations to stakeholders, including statutory consultees, members of the public and landowners. The model was made available to assist in SSE’s future planning so the design team and engineers could adjust and view any changes they made to the scheme.
Using the 3D model allowed SSE to quickly and easily present their plans in an engaging and inclusive format during public relations and community consultation activities associated with the proposed cable routes with the simple aim of improving communication.
The Orkney model is geographically very large and technical challenging but our in-house design team modified the 3D software and created new features to fully meet the requirements of our client. We delivered a fast and very useable solution that was roundly welcomed by the SSE design team.
