Gen Cymru approached 3DW to develop an extensive interactive 3D solution for the Vyrnwy Frankton grid connection. This project is a critical element of the national energy strategy for Wales designed to facilitate the transport of renewable energy from onshore wind farms to the grid, providing a vital new link in the UK’s transition to renewable power.
The project required the 3DW team to build a geographically large 3D solution which provided a clear, visual narrative for local communities and stakeholders. 3DW developed a vast study area, incorporating high-detail 3D modelling of two proposed substations and the entire 132kV overhead line route with input from the Green Gen engineers. By representing the infrastructure within a geographically accurate environment the application removed the ambiguity often associated with traditional 2D maps and drawings.
Utilising high detail terrain mapping, the model includes accurate low detail representations of all buildings within a 2km corridor of the route. An important feature of the solution is the real-time editing tool, which allowed the project team to adjust tower positions and immediately see the visual impact. To ensure a transparent assessment of visual impact, we also included a seasonal foliage toggle, showing the effectiveness of natural screening in both summer and winter conditions.
The Vyrnwy Frankton project represents just one component of a much larger, ongoing package of solutions provided by 3DW for Green Gen Cymru. By delivering a consistent and high-quality package of digital tools across multiple schemes, 3DW has enabled Green Gen to maintain a unified standard for stakeholder engagement. This collaborative approach has added immense value to their portfolio, ensuring that complex grid infrastructure is communicated with clarity, transparency, and technical precision across all their developments.
